Miguel Novelo (he/him/el) is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and researcher who focuses on emerging media and community organizing—currently working on algorithmic movies ☄️, technoshammanic installations 👻, thermodynamic hypnotism, and friendly computer viruses🫠.
Novelo earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2018, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from Stanford University in 2022. His work has been exhibited at various institutions, including the de Young Museum, the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City, and numerous international film festivals.
Currently a lecturer at Stanford Art and Art History Department and San Jose State University.

Miguel Novelo is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, educator, and researcher from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, who is currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. His work explores the intersections of geopolitical and cybernetic spaces, creating bridges between landscape, culture, and language. Novelo's practice engages with emerging technologies, community organizing, and immersive media, including artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and interactive installations.
Born in December 1992, Novelo began his formal arts education after receiving a scholarship from the Fundacion Pablo Garcia in 2011 to study at the Escuela Universitaria TAI in Madrid, where he earned an associate degree in 2013. Upon returning to Campeche, he co-founded the region's first competitive film festival, the Campeche Film Festival, and was honored with the Premio a la Juventud en Artes (Youth Award in Arts) in 2015.
He continued his education at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in filmmaking with a minor in art and technology in 2018. At SFAI, he received the "Outstanding Film Student Award" for two consecutive years. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Art Practice from Stanford University in 2022. During his time at Stanford, he began researching artificial intelligence, live streaming, and interactive media sculptures.
Novelo is also a co-founder of Futuro Sureste, a multidisciplinary collective established in 2018 that fosters dialogue about the future of the Yucatan Peninsula. As an educator, he is a lecturer at Stanford University's Art & Art History Department, San Jose State University, and the California College of the Arts. At Stanford, he co-developed the Art Department's first course on AI Art, and at CCA, he created the first Avatar Design course for the MFA Design program.
His films and artworks have been exhibited internationally at venues such as the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City, Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), and Sheffield Doc/Fest. Currently, he is researching and teaching in the Bay Area or might be in Campeche working with family and friends.

Miguel Novelo es un artista interdisciplinario, cineasta, educador e investigador originario de la península de Yucatán, México, y actualmente radicado en el Área de la Bahía de San Francisco. Su trabajo explora las intersecciones de los espacios geopolíticos y cibernéticos, creando puentes entre el paisaje, la cultura y el lenguaje. La práctica de Novelo se centra en tecnologías emergentes, organización comunitaria y medios inmersivos, incluyendo inteligencia artificial, realidad aumentada e instalaciones interactivas.

En 2018, cofundó el colectivo multidisciplinario Futuro Sureste, que busca incentivar diálogos sobre el futuro de la península de Yucatán. Como educador, es profesor en el Departamento de Arte e Historia del Arte de la Universidad de Stanford, en la Universidad Estatal de San José y en el California College of the Arts. En Stanford, codesarrolló el primer curso de Arte con IA del Departamento de Arte, y en CCA, creó el primer curso de Diseño de Avatares para el programa de maestría en Diseño.
Sus películas y obras han sido exhibidas internacionalmente en espacios como el de Young Museum en San Francisco, el Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), el Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) en la Ciudad de México, el Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia (FICM) y el Sheffield Doc/Fest.
